Woowwowowoow this book was so beautiful and heartwarming to read!! Lamya H writes with such vulnerability!! The way they write about queerness and the nuances with which culture and queerness exist was powerful. I really loved the chapters about Nuh, Yunus, and in particular Yusuf. I connected a lot to what Lamya was saying about how one might make themselves indispensable so that they can feel important in people’s lives.

I’ve never been so moved by a memoir. With every chapter I kept coming to the same realization: this is my new favorite book. The kind of book that after finishing, you cradle to your chest to try and absorbs its warmth deep into your spirit. The kind of book you finish and immediately want to start again.

Feeling so known, despite differing cultural and religious backgrounds, despite the author being a complete stranger, despite being separated by the pages of a book- is always a reality shattering experience. Lamya’s exploration of the Quran and Islam left me with a million questions and a desire to find the answers for them, as well as a pull to unpack my own relationship with religion. They made me realize that just because others may twists God’s words to inflict hate, it doesn’t mean I can’t use them to try and uncover avenues for hope, community, and radical joy. The ease in the way they interlace personal narratives and those from the Quran was deeply moving, it is so easy to see how they draw strength and courage from it- makes me see the beauty that they see, so very clearly.

Lamya describes their Muslim faith similarly to the way I see my relationship to my queerness: embodying justice, striving to protect your community in any way you can, a legacy of resistance.

This book made me feel hopeful, and I’m very grateful I decided to open it.

This book surpassed my expectations in every way.

The way Lamya writes about her journey about not just her own identity, but her relationships with family and friends and her activism through stories and people in Quran was incredibly thought-provoking and as someone who would identify as having a faith and being bi, this spoke to me, and helped me understand of the importance of truly breaking down and studying your faith as well as building community with others who share your identity.

The pacing of writing flowed so well against the messages of the story even though this story was not linear, and the ending felt like pieces of a puzzle coming together to unveil a really important message of identity, faith, and community.

A story that I believe will very much stick with me, overall 5 stars. 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟

There was so much vulnerability in this book and the memoirs were so beautifully interwoven with stories from the Quran.
