Finished this book in a day. As a queer person who is seeking community, parts of this book felt like they read my mind. As a white atheist much of this book was entirely unfamiliar to me. This made for such a satisfying mix, I connected with the main character, but also felt like I was learning and growing as I read it. The protagonists experiences were beautifully and satisfyingly interwoven with interpretations of the Quran. I particularly was intrigued by the connection btwn abusive relationships and immigration to the US. The Yusuf chapter fully made me cry. A super engaging emotional read.

This is the first book in a while that, when not reading it, I looked forward to when I could pick it back up. I love a memoir that breaks the mold - in this case, using stories from the Quran to describe lessons in Lamya’s life. I’m grateful Lamya was brave enough to put this book into the world because it is so needed.
