Damn I feel bad but I didn't like it that much. I liked the parallels to stories in the Quran. There's that. But you can't model your book title after Stone Butch Blues and write a book significantly worse than Stone Butch Blues. If you name a book like that I AM going to spend the entire time comparing you to Feinberg and find you worse. Also felt like a miss to put the word butch in the very title but devote so little of the book to exploring butch/butchfemme identity. Also the writing was mid at best. This is the most Buzzfeed coded part I can remember:
"Uh-oh," says my friend Cara, who is also white. [...] Ever since she switched her major to gender studies, she has become an incredibly ally. "You can't say that," Cara says to this girl.
"What? Why?" [...]
"Um, because of white privilege?" I say.
Y'all just reread Stone Butch Blues instead.

I found aspects of this, like the constant background level of stress and uncertainty that results from being an immigrant in a hostile immigration system very affecting, and the book made me reflect on my own myriad privileges, while appreciating and admiring the fights that hijabi and muslim queers go through daily.
The parallels to stories from the Quran are interesting, you see how these stories can inspire, be reflected upon, how people relate to these figures. and as someone from a semi-christian upbringing it was interesting to see how the stories were the same but different
The importance of religion in her life, to ground and inspire her really shone through, as well as the importance of her friendships.
i found the vague 'country where i was born'/'country where my parents live' references a little annoying, it could have been more specific, i think specificity often creates a more universal truth in a sense, i understand it was maybe the privacy concerns but its also not that difficult to guess, or it could have been altered.
