Author: Jory John
Illustrator: Benji Davies
Title: Goodnight Already!
Publisher: Harper
Date: 2015
Age range of intended reader as stated by book or publisher’s website: 4 to 8
Age range as you see it if that differs from what the book claims: I’d go lower on the low end - maybe 2 to 8 (although older kids with hyperactive younger siblings might be able to relate!)
Brief assessment of the book’s quality (artistic, literary, intellectual merit) – no more than two sentences: I think kids are going to find this book hilarious - I know I did! The illustrations of Duck suggesting alternatives to sleeping are laugh-out-loud funny!
Brief assessment of potential use of book with young readers, if applicable (storytime, curriculum support, summer reading list, etc.) – no more than one sentence: Although the humor derives from frustrating Bear’s attempts to sleep, this story could help younger readers be more empathetic to others who want to be left alone - this could make a nice storytime book.
Brief assessment of books’ appeal to potential readers - no more than two sentences:

Dr. Vandergrift's framing statements for illustrations:
What really caught my eye was that Duck looks a lot like the Aflac duck.
That artwork shows Bear’s tiredness and Duck’s wakefulness really well.
I'd like to see more texture on Duck to match/mirror the texture on Bear.
That artist is really skilled at using dark colors throughout Bear’s home to show his desire for sleep, and using bright colors for Duck’s wakefulness.
I am a little confused by why Davies didn’t change the color palette at the end, when Duck and Bear swap wakefulness.
If I had to characterize this illustration in one word, that word would be cartoon.

I love the combo of Bear and Duck. They are a hilarious twosome, and this book is so great for story time.

AKA my life as a parent. LOL Poor Bear just wants to sleep, but his neighbor, Duck, is ready to party! Will he ever be able to nestle in his comfy bed? Read and find out!

There's something about the cadence, role-playing, and turn-taking that made this a delight for reading aloud (with participation) for a 2 & 5 year old.
