I enjoyed this alternate perspective, and I enjoy the rumors (even outside of this book) that Báthory was merely the victim of a political plot, but I'm also careful not to let this romanticized fiction color my previous opinions of these people too much. They may very well have been the brutes history declares. 

I loved Velton's writing very much though, she has a beautiful way with words. I think the only thing I didn't really care for was the inclusion of the magic box

and that it revealed the main characters parentage

, since everything else was so grounded in historical accuracy.
