Peter Gay's classic, still relevant today. Its resonance today is no less powerful than that of political histories of the Weimar period. On the contrary, this time around culture seems to be the first battleground between democracy and Fascism. Although Gay's book stops before total Nazi control of German culture, it's a good reminder of what is lost when free expression dies.

Interesting and readable, lots of dates but a compelling narrative around them too. Sad time to read it, lots of it feels familiar (UK 2024).
