I can only describe this as Stir of a Echoes reimagined or reversed. And I was quite fond of that movie, so the witchy and at times poetic additions are a heartwarming contrast to the more nefarious reality of the situation. Very well balanced and enchanting though I found the beginning slow moving.

Overall, I liked it. The story takes place in conteporary times, where a teenage girl, a descendant of a long line of witchy women who walk the dangerous dark forest, meets a boy. The story reminded me of Jack Frost a bit, and the idea that Nora wasn't the kind of character who just wants to escape and be the one was refreshing. I liked how she wanted to connect with her past and she loved her traditions and her family. Also, the way that she wasn't the special one, at least for the biggest part of the book, was pretty interesting. The big twist in the end was very very very good and unpredictable. Oliver was okay too, however he was more of a thinly spread character than the dashing hero. The romance was too quick and most of Nora's decisions were rushed. The ending, although the idea was good, was too sudden and too cliche. Finally, the little extras about the Walker women were a nice touch.

I really really enjoyed reading this book. The atmosphere was absolutely stunning and really eerie. The only sad thing is that I did guessed the thriller aspect halway through the book but its okay, the atmosphere totally made up for that. This was a really easy read perfect to bed read in november/december. I really enjoyed it.

Edit - August, 2023: I'm upping this to 4 stars. I keep coming back to this book and recommending it for the atmospheric read and it's constantly on my mind whenever I see a forest.
3.5 stars really. This was a very atmospheric read, kind of haunting (if you are a scared easily like me, I suggest reading this book with the lights on) and definitely magical at times. I don't give it four stars because I figured out what happened relatively quickly, same with the final plot twist, but I enjoyed reading it, even in it's simplicity of the characters, and for the ending. The most I'll carry with me from this book is the mood, I'm sure to remember it next time I'm close to a forest. "We are the daughters of the wood." - Yes, yes we are.
