“The People We Meet in Stories” by Robert McParland gives an in depth view at some of the most beloved (and hated) characters in American literature. Products of their environment, each character is studied through the lens of the 1950’s and the political climate at the time of each one’s publication.
This world is well researched and extensive. Many, many popular novels and stories are discussed, giving this book something for everyone. The book is broken down into categories of character types and gives a wide mix for each type.
While this book is primarily about characters, the author often ties these characters into a historical timeline. Sometimes the historical notes take over the chapter longer than needed, but as far as giving context for the stories it is necessary.
Overall, I gave this book 3 stars. I enjoyed it, but it’s a niche read combining a love of literature and history. This can be a daunting topic for those outside of academia. Although, most avid readers would enjoy this work.
