A Storygraph Recommendation!

I really enjoyed this book. Probably the first book I've read with a transgender main character. Grant felt unrealistically "hero" like throughout the book, but the highlights to Amanda's challenges throughout her childhood and teenage life was interesting to read. I understand there is a huge element of fiction in the book, but I felt like I learnt it was okay to show that you might not know what's okay and not okay, but you're trying and you want help.

Read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. I also cannot express how emotional this story made me. The main character's struggles are laid out in such a sympathetic and relatable way; it breaks your heart to think wanting to be loved for who she really is could be such an extreme idea to some. Amanda's voice is so real; it absolutely is as if she could've been one of our sisters, a cousin, or a friend. Without a shadow of a doubt, a must read whether you're looking for your next queer novel, or just looking for your next emotional book with a sense of realism.

This book left me with a lot of questions. I wanted more - more of Amanda’s story, more insight into other characters.
I was sad to see the direction Bee’s character went, and I wish there had been more follow up - it ended up feeling just like a plot device.
All told though, I’m very glad to have read this book, both as a YA book filled with friendship and first love, as well as an insight into the trans experience.

This could be especially hard for trans femme people to read but if you’re feeling up to it/ aren’t trans (femme) i definitely recommend but it might break your heart
