I enjoyed the historical setting of this new detective series, India, 1949, in the immediate aftermath of partition and independence, the background to which played a big part in the criminal investigation. On New Year’s Eve, Persis Wadia, India’s first female police detective is whiling away her shift shuffling the usual paperwork at Malabar House, where she is based, along with other officers who are difficult to place. Unexpectedly she is called out to investigate the murder of a prominent British diplomat, a matter of the utmost sensitivity, given the political climate of the time. Persis is a firebrand and a prickly character who intends to finally make her mark by resolutely solving the case in the face of the many obstacles she faces - misogyny, political expedience, insubordination.
