This was one of the books I picked up at Daunt Books in London. I specifically visited the Scottish section as I had just spent a week there and I was interested in seeing what books were available. I loved reading this and found the short stories not only interesting but at times amusing. A favorite of mine was to read about the mythological creatures of the area, something I know little about.

Daunt Books print of this book is also absolutely beautiful; simple but bright.

McPhee's warm, unsparing eye turned on the particular Scottish island that happens to be my personal definition of heaven. Perfect.

After half a century this book holds up well. While no doubt nearly all the people in it are long dead, they live again in these pages. McPhee avoids the temptation to delve into the history and sociology of the island and instead relies on brief, beautiful character portraits to give a sense of the people and place.

I stumbled across this book about 3/4 year ago I think. It's been on my nightstand ever since, and I've read it on and off. Every time I opened it, it immediately took me back to life on another Scottish island, one that was my home away from home 2 years ago. I miss it often, and this book helped a lot with that. Its written in a very interesting and, to me, new way, which I had to adjust to but came to love throughout. If you're looking for a blunt ant just slightly romanticized view into island life, this is for you.

Much shorter in length and lighter in tone than I had been expecting, I blazed through this book in a day. Thoughtful and musing. Much enjoyed.

An interesting glimpse into the upper and lower class lives of the Hebridean islanders. However, it's terribly out of date and rather patronising in its tone at times.
