Everything that could be said about this book has been said, so my one objective statement here is buy an expensive version, with a lot of footnotes. I skimped and bought a 5$ Wordsworth Classics edition and the footnotes gave the bare minimum cultural and religious context for someone unfamiliar with Christianity and late 19th century Irish sociology, language and politics.
This book, to me, feels like those silly mirrors in carnivals. It feels like a reflection of me but with just enough aberration and cultural noise around it to not get overly sentimental, if that makes sense.
It is a beautiful narrative, which plays upon itself and lends itself very well to post-structuralist and feminist readings, which is the way I tried to read it. It is also full of very good humor.
It gets you teary eyed and then reminds you that you are the child of a different era, a different universe almost, and that filled me with both hope and dread. Will re-read in a year!

Forgot to rate this one. James Joyce… I simply cannot take you seriously anymore…Your writing is cool, pretentious, prehistoric, and apparently… so was your overall… rizz
This would repay rereading, several times. It's easy to read, but there is so much going on in the text that I felt like I was missing meanings, references, allusions, connections all the time. Impressive and likeable. Why did it take me until now to get to it?
