I'm not sure if I just failed to connect with the characters, but it failed to grip me as usual with this author. I find the concept more interesting than the execution, and got a bit repetitive, especially the end with the final repetition of the different solutions that weren't working. I got the concept after the first, they were too brief and confused to be interesting and too many for being that short . It was bound to happen, can't always write all 5 or 4 stars I guess

Very interesting concept that reminded me a lot of The Long Earth series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, but with less humor and much higher stakes. The political commentary was a little heavy-handed. There are 6 protagonists, and they include a trans woman and two lesbians, and one of the main villains is both a billionaire capitalist and a Neo-Nazi. Not at all subtle.
So, I feel that Adrian Tchaikovsky is such a hit or miss for me. There's books of his such as 'Children of time' and 'Dog of war' that I have absolutely loved and others that felt disappointing. As always the themes and ideas are super interesting, but the characters feel like that, characters rather than people.
This is a book that would have been firmly in my "love it to bits" category if I didn't feel the writing was so flat. The subject matter of parallel earths and divergent evolutionary paths I find super interesting. Furthermore the cast is diverse and the end values of the book align my own. It got to a point that I found the scientific interludes more interesting than a lot of the development in between.
I loved the execution of the ending. It is just a shame that it took me three quarters of the book to start loving it.
