REVIEW: Thank you to NetGalley, Flatiron Books, and Marit Weisenberg for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book follows Ingrid who suffered a concussion at one of her diving meets. Ingrid can't remember what happened to cause her to hit her head, only that she met eyes with her neighbor and crush Van right before. Ingrid is also unable to sleep, and one-night see sees Van staring out at her. Both the teens begin to meet up and spend their sleepless nights together while they try to piece her memory back together. They also get wrapped up in a mystery of one of the houses on their block which holds some dark secrets.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. In the beginning, I had a hard time getting into it, connecting to the characters, and I thought it was slow. However, as the story progressed the plot became more interesting and I became more invested. The last third of the book was so good, and I wish that there would have been more little clues or lead up to some of the big reveals that would have made the first section of the book more fast-paced. I did like Ingrid as a character and I thought that her (and the other characters) family situations were inclusive. The author included all sorts of family make-ups and dynamics which are representative of families today, so that was refreshing.

I would recommend this book to others who love YA books about teens in high school or books that follow specific friend groups. This story did have a little romance and mystery in it as well, so I think many can find something to enjoy in this story.

SYNOPSIS: Ingrid can’t sleep. She can’t remember, either. A competitive diver, seventeen-year-old Ingrid is haunted by what she saw at the pool at a routine meet, before falling off the high dive and waking up concussed. The only thing she remembers about the moment before her dive is locking eyes with Van—her neighbor, former best friend, and forever crush—kissing his girlfriend on the sidelines. But that can’t be all.

Then one sleepless night, she sees Van out her window…looking right back at her. They begin not sleeping together by night, still ignoring each other at school by day.

Ingrid tells herself this is just temporary, but soon, she and Van are up every night piecing her memory back together. As Van works through his own reasons for not being able to sleep, they’re both pulled into a mystery that threatens to turn their quiet neighborhood into a darker place than they realized.

I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and Flat Iron books in exchange for an honest review

Usually when I have high hopes for a book, they are not all met. That is not the case for The Insomniacs. I knew I wanted to read this after reading the synopsis, and feel so fortunate to have gotten an ARC. This book is a perfect mixture of romance and mystery, and the pages turn themselves. I think the slow burn writing style really complemented both the mystery and the romance, and made the twists at the end so much more thrilling.

Ingrid is our main character, and I admired her a lot. I think it was so nice to see her vulnerability, fears, and stresses, but then also see her strength, perseverance, and resilience. I think she was an amazing lead female. The author obviously did a lot of research on living with a concussion. Her descriptions of symptoms were spot on. The only minor discrepancy is that with Ingrid's mom as a nurse, I doubt she would have been driving, or back to school as quickly as she was.

I really appreciated that Ingrid and her mom had a healthy relationship. I think showing positive relationships between parents and children is really beneficial to younger readers. I also really loved the relationship between Ingrid and Van. I think they complemented each other really well. Van is a really great male lead. He complimented the story by being a bit mysterious and quiet. I liked the side characters for the most part, most of them had something to do with the plot of the story. The only side characters that really didn't have a role were Izzie and her friends. However, their lack of development and purpose didn't affect the quality of the story.

This book could’ve been so much more. The overall story was interesting, but not a single character had any depth. It’s like she drew adjectives to define each character and stayed completely committed to that one idea. It’s hard to develop any attachment to characters you don’t empathize with. The author really missed the mark.

Terrifying, white knuckled. Good, but made me keep the lights on.

2.5

This book has left me craving a true thriller. The romance was underwhelming. The overarching theme got lost amidst so many threads of plot. I wanted to love it, but that just isn't going to happen.

The handling of the adult/minor relationship as the ultimate mystery, as well as the drug use in the story, literally made content warnings an actual spoiler. Creating a story in which those kinds of experiences are treated without the due respect to readers is unnecessary. I understand the why and the how, but I wish things had been done differently or that the mystery had been murder. This story hits too close to home, and if I'd known beforehand what I was getting, I wouldn't have read the book. When reading is escapism, I don't want to run back to my own reality.

I added the 0.5 because the writing style was easy to read and the romance was better in the first half.
