4.5 stars. That’s what I was looking for! An excellent story, great characters, really cool world building, and a great narrator of an audiobook. Very enjoyable and I look forward to the next book.

I almost didn’t finish this book, twice. It just took me a really long time to get into it. The main character Emma and her boyfriend Jeremy was just off and that’s the first scene in the book. I came back to it because of all the great reviews. I pushed myself to keep reading and it did get better. The world the author created is intriguing. The characters were alright; sometimes they felt a little bland. The surprise twist ending (which I saw a mile away) was a stretch to me. It just didn’t fit. Felt more like it was forced rather then being a natural path of the story. I’m hopeful now that the foundation of this series has been set that I’ll be able to sink into the next book quickly.
Okay, so I started this with a good bit of skepticism. It totally wiped that away. This is actually a really great start to a terrific series. If you find yourself in the same situation I did--a little skeptical--give it a go! If you like paranormal romance/urban fantasy books, you'll like this!
Brimstone Bound is more of a crime UF novel than any sort of romance. But that does change a little bit later on. So if you hate romance and don't want to get dragged into a series that eventually does get smoochy, I'd say read the first book (this one) and take the ending as the end. But for those who like a little sizzle with their sleuthing, definitely give this one a try!
I wish I'd seen it earlier. Or maybe later, so there could be more books in the series. :D

Interesting start to a series, definitely going to continue it. I found some bits a little predicable, but others not at all. So if you enjoy a light mystery with a bit of the supernatural thrown in it could be your thing.

Nothing happened other than Emma going in circles asking questions. Lucas wasn’t interesting enough to make her boring tasks feel less like a chore to read. And while I understand that detective work is very similar to just asking questions.. I did not grab a FANTASY book with BRIMSTONE in the title so I could read endless mundane detective work.
The biggest downfall to me is the lack of decent support characters. She has no friends, she’s lying to and avoiding her boyfriend, everyone she talks to is the same kind of stuffy and domineering.
There just really isn’t anything carrying this story or even propping it up.. so inevitably, it fell flat
Helen Harper has some entertaining books. Slouch Witch series was funny, as was Wishful Thinking. They’re fun, stuff happens and it’s interesting enough to want to continue. It’s poopy that this was a flop
