I debated reading this at all because I HATED The Dead Romantics. But I was in need of a romance palette cleanser so I figured why not. And I’m glad I did because this was exponentially better. For me, anyway.

If The Dead Romantics was Just Like Heaven, The Seven Year Slip was The Lake House.

I started this book on audio and really liked it. But because I was visiting family, I had to switch to the physical copy more than halfway through and it lost the spark for me that the audiobook had. I liked both the main characters a lot and I think they had great chemistry. They felt real and mature. The book started off so strong for me (although the author could have cut back on talking about Lemon’s passport so much). It was about at the 80% mark that it started falling a little flat and felt rushed. Overall I liked the concept and I might go back and read it again because I think a second read through might result in a higher rating.

DID NOT FINISH

Something about the style made it hard to connect; maybe because it felt like there was a lot of brand name dropping right off the bat. Seemed like forced pretentiousness.

So turns out I don’t actually hate contemporary romance…

For the longest time I thought I’d never find a romance book I truly loved. There were ones that came close but there was always something that annoyed me or I didn’t like. But this had everything I wanted from it. Quite literally the perfect romance.

Probably my favorite book ever. This is my first time reading a book with magical realism; I loved it and will definitely be reading more. This was the perfect fall read. The writing was warm and descriptive in all the right ways. Poston's writing is like a hug. The main characters were loveable and relatable. Aunt Analea will forever stick with me. This book touches on so many subjects without it feeling stuffy or like it was doing too much. It touches on female friendship, love, loss, grief, making the most of life, and embracing change. This was a beautiful story that I will definitely be revisiting in autumns to come.

It’s a love story, yes—but it’s also about grief, healing, and learning to embrace the life waiting for you.

The magical realism is woven so beautifully: a Manhattan apartment where past and present overlap, connecting two people who shouldn’t have met. It’s whimsical and romantic, but also deeply moving.
