Reading this after having read The Dead Romantics, I come to see that grief is a topic Ashley Poston handles incredibly well. She cradles grief and loneliness so delicately within the pages of her books, and narrates them with such poetry. But alongside that sorrow, she's also able to weave such a lovely story about romance, and how certain people can help heal us in our heartbreak. I also loved the message she instilled that change isn't always a bad thing. We love people as they are in the past and we love them more as they change towards the future.
But perhaps what I loved most about The Seven Year Slip was how despite predicting the main plot point of the story, I was still so invested in the journey. It didn't once detract from the book and instead made me wonder even more how Poston would take us to the end. To be an author who doesn't let predictability interfere with readers' engagement, or the quality of storytelling, is what sets apart a great writer from an okay writer, and I think Ashley Poston is a fantastic writer.

I typically don't care for magical realism, but the time travel romance was done really well. At the same time, I wish there had been more romance and the ending seemed a little rushed. There's a lot of focus on how people change over time including their relationships with family and friends and career goals. The female lead is dealing with a lot of grief, so the impact of that in changing her is also a big focus.

A contemporary time-slip romance set in NYC's publishing and restaurant scenes and anchored by an inherited Upper East Side apartment — what a great idea for a paranormal/magical realism story with a lot of heart and sense of place! I wish I had been more convinced by the romance. Insta-anything isn't my thing, so I had a hard time with this one even though I generally liked the characters. And, unfortunately, my lack of investment in the relationship left my brain free to think too critically about the rest of the plot. What I did like, besides the characters, however, was the portrayal of grief, and the thoughts about change, connection, and timing. (Don't skip the author's note.)

I absolutely loved this book.
Often when you love a book so much (The Dead Romantics), you have that fear that the next book by the same author won’t have that same magic as the last.
I had nothing to worry about!!! I adored the setting and the characters and the magic of it all. The serendipity and the way the story loops back on itself so neatly and satisfyingly.
I loved that as well as love/romance, it’s a story about time, aging, coming of self, adventure, friendship, choosing yourself and mental health.
I can’t wait to see what Poston writes next and I’m sad I’ve already finished this!
