The core concept of this book-- a magical apartment that links two points in time, seven years apart-- is a lovely twist on classic time travel plots. This is a novel about love but also grief-- at the start of the novel, the protagonist Clementine has just lost her beloved aunt, as well as navigating major transitions in her career and relationships. When the apartment first transports her to the past, leading her to encounter the rising but still unknown chef Iwan, she is initially in disbelief about literally entering a past where her aunt is still alive. Yet exploring the past and forging not only a friendship but over time a romance with Iwan helps Clementine to find a new way forward in her life and her career.
Her relationship with Iwan is playful and romantic, and the leads have a good, flirty chemistry. It's not hard for readers to guess where Iwan ends up seven years later, but the tension comes from whether he'll still recognize Clementine (Lemon, as he affectionately terms her) after all that time, and whether he'll still be someone she recognizes, for better or worse.
