This book gave me a black eye and threw me over the side of a building.

I already can’t wait to read it again.

This poetry collection talks about race, heartbreaks, masculinity, and environmental awareness (but mostly focuses on love in general). I personally liked the brief mention of trees in one of the entries, and I wished it had more of that. The delivery of the poems was good, I just wished they were deeper. I enjoyed reading it though, definitely helped me read more books in my tbr :)

I really enjoyed many of his poems. “Ouch” really spoke to me. Bookmarked others to share with my sons and family. Quick read for “never gonna let you down” mini challenge prompt.

So many of these poems are incredible, but then a few (emphasis on few) are so cheesy that they read like mediocre instagram poetry. Still easily one of my favorite poetry collections: I absolutely recommend.

An amazing book of poetry. Several of the poems really resonated with me and I devoured this book in one sitting. He covers topics from race to depression to love and weaves everything in seamlessly. A few of my favorite passages are below. I heard him read a poem (the dehydration one) on Conan or Seth Meyers and knew I would enjoy the rest. I highly recommend checking this one out!

March 10, 2019 – page 93
"Remember, every year two million people die of dehydration. So it doesn't matter if the glass is half full or half empty. There's water in the cup. Drink it and stop complaining."

"Muscle is created by lifting things that are designed to weigh us down. When your shoulders are heavy, stand up straight and call it exercise. Life is a gym membership with a really complicated cancellation policy.""

March 10, 2019 – page 91
"Complainers (really good poem about life being better than it seems at times).

"When your day is a museum of disappointments, hanging from events that were outside your control, when you feel like your guardian angel put in his two weeks notice two months ago and just decided not to tell you..."

March 10, 2019 – page 31
""When People Ask How I'm Doing" is a great honest look at depression.

"...I want to say / getting out of bed has become a magic trick. / I am probably the worst magician I know..." "...but I'd rather not ruin someone's day with my tragic honesty / so instead I treat my face like a pumpkin. / I pretend it's Halloween. / I carve it into something acceptable. / I laugh and I say, / ' I'm doing alright'."

March 10, 2019 – page 23
"...I'd write about how / you have the audacity to be beautiful / even on days when everything around you is ugly..." (From If I Was a Love Poet) :)"
