When I saw this book a few years ago, I got in from the library right away, but some things happened, such as lending it and losing it. Now, I saw this book few days ago and knew I needed to read it.
This book had very funny relatable characters, and the plot is perfect. Reading how the Vanderbeekers saved their brownstone house was really interesting and hooking.

This is modern children's literature at its best. It's age-appropriate and well-written (except for too much passive voice, a pet peeve of mine and why it only gets 4 stars), respecting the intelligence of its audience. It's modern yet classic. Smartphones and computers play roles, but mostly the kids come up with their own fun, running around their New York City neighborhood and holding secret meetings in their bedrooms. The story is fun, the characters lively and likeable. Maybe it's just been too long since I read a "kid's" book, but I admired, enjoyed, and envied the intelligent innocence of "The Vanderbeekers."
This was such a sweet, fun, heartfelt middle grade novel for literally any age! I loved the story, all the siblings working independently but together to save their Harlem brownstone, and the sweet middle school romance B-plot. Everything about this was full of heart and adorable and it reminded me how much I love middle grade. I will definitely be reading more of this series!

The 5 Vanderbeeker children work to convince their landlord to renew their lease on their apartment. If they are not successful this will be the last Christmas that they will be spending here where their father grew up. Will they be successful in convincing Mr. Beiderman to let them stay? What antics will they come up with?
A pre-read for a kiddo of mine who is anxious. It does contain a minor theme regarding the death of family members of a character, so this kid will skip this book for now, but the rest of my kids will love it. It has all the makings of a modern classic, imho. Ramona Quimby and Penderwick vibes, but set in 21st century Harlem. The family life is warm and generous, but real. The siblings have normal squabbles, but are kind to each other as well. The parents are loving but also get harried and stressed (bc, you know, five kids and a non-renewed lease). Loved it and will absolutely continue the series.
This was a cute read. I enjoyed the childlike innocence that came from the kids trying to save their home. I liked how wholesome the ending was.
Cute YA read - my middle school self would have really loved this one.

Absolutely delightful! Read this aloud to my 14 year old daughter and we both really liked it. A good story is a good story regardless of the "recommended reading age!" :)
