The bright cover and jaunty title did not prepare me for the contents of this book (I’m not one for reading or remembering synopses). I think this is one of the saddest books I’ve ever read, with cycles of violence and self-hatred that never end, spurred on by misogyny and homophobia, not to mention greed. A devastating exploration of the tourism industry in Jamaica, alongside female queerness.

This was not an easy read. The first two thirds of the book set up the family and community relationships and drag a bit, while the last third races to the conclusion. The themes surrounding sexual exploitation and sexual violence cannot be avoided and show how multigenerational trauma can become embedded within a family.

I could not put this one down, I think I devoured it in less than 2 days. Here Comes the Sun is a story of 3 women, a mother and her two daughters, in Jamaica, living in poverty alongside the wealth of tourism - which is simultaneously their source of income and threatening to destroy them. The book totally immerses you into their lives and although it takes a few chapters to get going as secrets start to be revealed you will find yourself entirely hooked. The descriptions of Jamaica was pretty stunning, but the book is not a light read. As our characters continuously hurt each other, and look back to wonder if it was ever worth it, you’ll be left thinking about them for days after.

This book was a slow burn for me.  I really enjoyed it but had expected it to be a faster moving book for some reason.  The content was challenging and I felt like I often needed a breather from it after reading for a while.
