Wasn’t sure about this when I first started but grew to enjoy it. The characters are interesting and it was kinda gender bendy/ queer!!

Anticlimactic ending. Also, I feel like there was supposed to be some kind of underlying subtext throughout the book that maybe I just didn’t get?

One of the many books where the protagonist is not our narrator, who is obsessed with the elusive Fabienne. It becomes increasingly unclear whether Fabienne is a fabrication of Agnes - certainly, she is a romantic version of herself. And just as Agnes and Fabienne fictionalise their lives for an unsuspecting urban educated class, there’s a hint that Agnes may be doing the same to us - or even that now, as a member of that educated class now herself, that’s how she experiences her own memories, eternally alienated from her own past.
