I love pirate stories, but I didn't realize how much I was missing from my pirate reading experience.
Things such as:

-a sapphic romance between an Asian female and Black gender-fluid main character
-mermaids that survive off human blood (vampire mermaids you could say?)
-a mysterious, but very cool nonbinary pirate captain that I NEED to know more about (how dare you create the Pirate Supreme and not let me enjoy more than ten pages about them)

I tend to be leery of YA books nowadays because I don't relate as well to its content anymore, but I found that the plot of the story really pulled through and kept me engaged all the way to the end. There was political intrigue, there was romance, there was violence and betrayal and so. much. murder. It was certainly fast-paced, but in the best way.

I'm going to tell my kids that this was Pirates of the Caribbean, because it means that we all get to live out our gay dream with Elizabeth Swan or Will Turner.

"Powerful things, stories. If you care to listen to them."

overall, it was a nice fantasy book. the magical elements were very few and it was lacking an explanation at some point but somehow it worked.
there where multiple povs which is always a resource I enjoy, and that made the story a little bigger than you would think. it wasn't just a love story, it was about freedom and finding oneself, it was fighting for what is right, it was about loyalty (wether it was good or bad placed, loyalty at last), even themes like gender questioning and the different paths women and men take and why.

the beginning was slow, it was weird because something was supposed to happen as soon as they hit the waters and then the chapters go on and on and it feel like the time wasn't properly thought about it.

loved every single character, even those who where the enemies.

maybe my favorite dynamic was rake and genevieve: they're both from the same colonized people but they choose different paths–while she's working with the imperials, he lives to destroy them. I think the book doesn't do justice about a lot of difficult and interesting themes like that, including classism and racism, would've loved to read more in deep all of those problematics because honestly the characters are overall well written.

I'm so confused as to why there's a second book, since the main characters have.. quite the ending, but I'll definitely check it out.

What a unique take on mermaids!

The idea was wonderful but the pacing dragged in too many places. It was enjoyable but forgettable.
