Book was rather unremarkable and wrapped up in a rushed few pages at the end. I love the fantasy aspect but overall kind of a let down. Half star for queer af

This was surprisingly pretty serious and mature for a YA novel, I was expecting fun pirates and a dramatic romance, although this was not a negative discovery. I picked it up for the cover from my library so also had no idea about the queer themes, which was a nice surprise in a book about pirates and mermaids and ocean magic, especially since I NEVER see sapphic main characters in any genre unless I really look for it. The characters also weren't reduced to their queer identities but they were still an important part of them which was explored just the right amount.

The characters and their motivations were really well thought out and each character was unique and interesting. There were a few side characters that didn't get as much screen time as I would've liked (the supreme, the witch, some of the Imperials at the floating islands), but there was a pretty big cast so that's fair, maybe the next book will provide. I also felt like Flora and Evelyn could've done with a bit more compatibility, and their big difference and conflict(?) was kind of brushed aside and never touched on again.

The magic system was a little floaty and unclear, but I think that's just a preference thing, I'm very logic-driven so I prefer a more strict and fleshed-out system. Although the idea of the memories with the sea and the mermaids and their blood was really interesting.

I also would've loved way more writing about the setting. I felt a bit short-changed there when we were on the ships and the floating islands, all rich settings that weren't used to their full potential.

But overall this was a great and unique little book that I enjoyed and I think most people would too :)
