Tell me a book has pirates, mermaids, AND is queer? Sign me up immediately.
I loved the representation and diversity throughout the story and found the world mostly compelling as well. However, I feel that the trajectory changed so often I had a hard time understanding just what the POINT of the story was? Maybe having so many POVs made it difficult for me to commit to each character in such a short time as I did struggle with actually feeling connected to Flora or Evelyn. It being a shorter book does limit how much we can know about the characters, so, I was mostly involved on a surface level. I was interested in their stories but didn’t find myself to be truly invested in the characters or their outcomes. I never found myself rooting for them.
The pirates were a given and obviously featured throughout. Though I found there was not much of actual seafaring involved, mostly a story set with the sea as a backdrop. The witch, I feel, was barely featured and the magic is pretty limited, I would have loved to have seen it explored more! I do see there’s a sequel planned so maybe we will get more meat there.
Overall it was an enjoyable read and a low stakes one I’d recommend it you’re looking for an easy and fun queer pirate-esque story. Hopefully in a sequel we get to explore some of the characters more as I feel this book almost could been seen as a prequel to story and not the main event storyline.
Would give 3.5 stars.

There is a lot unanswered questions at the end. Would personally love a book about the Sea and her Mermaids.

I really enjoyed this book! The world feels lived in and diverse, the main characters very likable and grew throughout the book. There's a bit of sequel bait at the end but I appreciated that it felt like a whole and complete story on its own. Also, enby pirate supreme and queer mermaid lovers for the win
Graphic: Colonisation, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Alcoholism, Blood
Minor: Child death, Gore, Sexual assault, War
References to sexual assault of a side character, brief mention of child death, background mentions of war. Also some mentions of queer relationships not being accepted but not a focus of the book
Several instances of alcohol abuse and bloody injuries
Large references to active colonization, several detailed descriptions of injuries throughout the book.
