DID NOT FINISH: 13%

This book’s reviews were full of buzzwords, and no meaningful content. The characters had no redeemable qualities and they weren’t using their brains. Also both characters are under age and you are introduced to one of the main characters as being lesbian as she coherces her maid sexually. But there is no mention of lack of consent for the maid? Rape, murder, slavery, drug addiction were all mentioned within the first 50 pages with no trigger warning. Also one of the main characters is coded as a person of color and is also totally fine with being part of the slave trade.

I really enjoyed the world and characters established in this book, and I look forward to reading the next one in the series. I liked the portrayal of the sea as a character, and the complex alliances and rivalries among the sea and pirates, imperials, colonies, mermaids, etc.

I found the pacing to be somewhat inconsistent. There are definitely aspects of the story that I'd have liked to know more about - for example, the witch storyline. There's a lot of unexplored territory about the magic system and the idea of there being a price for everything.

I would not call this an uplifting book - there is a lot of suffering and betrayal.

Sapphic and pirates in the same sentence? count me in!

The book was okay to read, but I would have liked it a lot more if it were three separate books. It would have worked so well to make each of the parts into a complete story. Honestly, then it would have made more sense and not felt quite as unfinished.

Flora/Florian was a very interesting character and I liked him/her, but I did not really care about Evelyn when she was injured.

The ending was very very short. (and kinda unpredictable, random)

So in short, I would not recommend this book but I would not NOT recommend this book. Like, it was fine and fun and entertaining. But there was LOTS of missed potential.

Flora just leaving Alfie? And then being okay with it and then not okay with it only to leave him again? It was just weird for me.

Flora being a witch????? And then becoming a mermaid just like that??? I want more witch Flora like what the heck, the book is literally named the mermaid the witch and the sea!!

The whole thing with memory and the Sea was super interesting to me and I wanted more !!! The importance of memory and the role it plays- and how our main villain is without morals because he has no memories. So interesting!!

I don’t care about Genevieve. I was uninspired by her POV.

I LOVED THE SEA INTERLUDES. Loved them loved them loved them.

On the other hand I wasn’t fond of when the witch told those little mini stories idk why I was a tad bored.

Just like in general, I loved the whole thing conceptually. The idea of the Pirate Supreme and the conflicts with the Imperials was all very good. As a surface level fairytale-esque story, it’s amazing. But I wanted more from it. So overall it was a fun read, thought provoking at times, but maybe could’ve used more workshopping.
