Soooooo, I really liked this book, I read it cause Pirates, Queer characters, and mermaids.

To not give too much away Florian is a pirate, Evelyn is an imperial woman, and they are so enjoyable to read about together and apart. They’re both flawed individuals, but also complex. It’s not black and white as far as them being good or bad, and that goes for some other characters as well. And trigger warning, there is murder, implied sexual assault, and torture. So if that’s too much for you, I’d steer clear.

The first part of the book felt pretty fast and engaging, the second half felt a little slow in my opinion but not in a bad way, and by the end it’s going fast and thrilling. There are also a number of plot twists that had me excited. Also there’s magic too.

What’s also interesting is the books take on social issues regarding colonization, sexism, poverty, discrimination, and gender expression & identity.

Also it’s really cool that there’s a map of the world at the front of the book, I’d honestly have a bit of confusion if not for that. The map shows a bunch of islands circling around the empty space that is the sea.

Overall, good book, would recommend if you like pirates, mermaids, mystical magic, and queer representation.

Loved this. It grabbed me from the get go and I didn't want to put it down.
I don't think I've ever read anything like it and I can not wait to read the sequel
