What a book! Really enjoyed it.
I heard about it before the start of my exchange semester in South Korea and picked it up before I left. Reading it while being in the country it is about and experiencing its culture simultaneously really felt special. It made me appreciate the things I love about SK more but also opened my eyes to have a more critical perspective.

Quit enjoyed the weird mix of fiction, biographical influences and actual scientifical/ fact based passages.

A fellow exchange student actually saw me reading it and asked if she could analyse it for a term project. Loved her presentation on it.

Have not yet come around to see the movie but really want too.

The book started with an interesting premise: a woman who experiences dissociative identities following what we can assume some kind of trauma. This piqued my interest and I wanted to learn more about the character and her story. The reminder of the book, however, could have been better written as an article rather than a novel. My problem is that the characters were not well-developed for a novel: every passage is about another aspect of sexism, yet that’s all that we get to discover about the characters. While I do think that learning about sexism, specifically in cultures other than our own, is relevant and interesting, I don’t think a uni-dimensional portrayal of the characters helps the cause. Instead of connecting with the characters and experiencing the world through their eyes, I felt like being spoon-fed very obvious messages.

That being said, I can see why this book can be ground-breaking in a societies where perceptions about sexism and traditional gender roles are rigid (at least until recently?). However, apart from triggering such conversations, I don’t think the literary potential of the topic was fulfilled by the author.
