Isabel Lucerno’s Splintered, while not necessarily my first encounter with smut, is a text that deviates from what I typically read. That being said, I experienced a variety of emotions while reading this book, including shock, embarrassment, rumination, annoyance, and intrigue. Am I saying this is the best contemporary, LGBTQIA+ romance ever? No. But considering I normally rate contemporary romance a 0, I’d like to think that Splintered offers something a little more substantial than what I’ve seen before.

Though the catalyst for plot development relied heavily on cliche, I found the execution of the overall story surprising. About 35 minutes into the audiobook, I figured I knew exactly how Splintered would progress. But instead, I found myself invested in the complicated dynamic of the romance. I wanted to know how these characters were going to navigate something new while being respectful of their romantic counterpart. The book does find itself with an ending extremely characteristic of the contemporary genre (a disappointment but whatever), but I certainly appreciate the extremely…animated work of the audiobook narrators.

This book was so super cute and I think anything from this series would be the perfect summer read. So cozy and I loved Jarrod and Devin. This is my first book from the series but defs wont be my last. It was a quick and wholesome story and yet it still felt so real and developed. I usually prefer enemies to lovers but this old friends to lovers was a nice pallet cleanse. I have a feeling these books are all comfort reads bc they are deep and emotional and just a happy loving time overall. cute cute cute. I also appreciate as a queer couple and dynamic one character wasnt OTT masculine and the other super fem. It was just a nice balance between the two and I always appreciate those dynamics more bc why does there have to be 2 distinct roles? there doesnt. And even the way in which Jarrod felt it didnt matter explaining himself to his teammates about his love life like that always feels so good to read like it truly doesnt matter who another person chooses to love.  We love love. And Devin being a porn star also was like yes and? and i loved that too like can we please normalize a wide arrange of humans in many feilds and allowing them to do as they please. Jarrod wasnt some overtly masculine hockey player or NHL champion. he was just a great goalie on a great team and people are more complex than just their professions! this book highlights that and showcases couples can make it work no matter the circumstances as long as you are willing to be true to yourself and love yourself enough to love another fully. some really good lines in here and points made about not labeling yourself either and again just focusing on love.

I loved these sweet characters, and can’t stop thinking about them!

I thought this was very well written and really loved it!

Overall the book was good. It’s a slooooow burn so it took way longer for me to get into the story. (Nothing to do with the author, just a me issue).
Steamy, friends to lovers. Jarrod and Devin run into each other again at The Black Diamond Resort after years apart and it’s an immediate connection between them both. They are both in sticky situations regarding their careers and the relationship they are pursuing.
