This read like fanfiction to me. I really enjoyed the magic system, but the rest felt underdeveloped. The plot was meandering, plot points were resolved out of nowhere, and the love interest never showed how he was cool or interesting (he just has a sad tragic backstory). I’m also not a fan of prickly female main characters who bite off the head of the love interest for no good reason. Finally, the cliff hanger! Don’t think I will read the sequel.

I absolutely loved this book. What a unique story and a unique magic system. I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did an amazing job. I was immediately obsessed and this book held my attention the entire time.
I really enjoyed the dark academia setting which truly gave us a view into classes, student politics, etc. The FMC is an initiate who is in a fake engagement with the prince/Headmaster of the school which adds a such an intriguing plotline to this already very interesting story. Plus, add that said grumpy, brooding Headmaster has a fluffy kitty named Priss....stop it.
The plot takes twists and turns and there are many secrets and some yet to be uncovered. My one critique is the relationship between Kailis and Clara. It's a reluctant ally/fake engagement relationship and of course true feelings develop. But because there's such a a lack of trust between the two, the relationship stays more surface level and the depth that I was hoping for just never really developed.
There is a plot twist at the end, but in my opinion if you don't see it coming, you weren't paying attention. I will be impatiently waiting for book 2!!!
