I was initially put off by the unconventional format of the book, but I stuck with it and really loved it. Still amazed how sad and happy the ending is, especially considering you know what's going to happen essentially from chapter 1!

Where can I begin with The Book Thief?

I first read it when I was twelve for my own enjoyment. I had never cried at a book before- but this time, I sobbed. SOBBED. It was the first piece of literature I thoroughly enjoyed with my whole being.

The characters- Liesel, Rosa, Hans, Rudy, Ilsa, Max.... they all weave their way into your heart. I am not being dramatic when I say this the best historical fiction book of all time. Possibly one of the best books ever.

You cannot say you are a book fan until you've laughed and cried and marveled at the amazing writing and history in The Book Thief. Markus Zusak does wonders with the creative narrator, Death, and his interest in the main characters' plotline.

Read The Book Thief.

You will not regret it.

This took me apart piece by piece and put me back together again. The unconventional narrator and the beautiful poetic language used in the book made me savour every piece much like I imagine the main character did with each of the books she stole. This love letter to humanity and the power of words is one of the absolute best things I have ever read but I’m not sure I could ever bring myself to read it again. Like our narrator, I will forever be haunted by these humans.
