I might be in the minority here with this review, but I honestly didn't love this. I was super excited to start reading this since we had to wait a while for it to be released. I liked that Hava was the narrator. The first third-ish of the book was good and a useful memory refresher for what happened in the previous books. However, I didn't love that the first HALF of this 600+ page book was spent on the ship. Yes, a few things did happen on the ship that should've had me like GASP, but really my reaction was okay when are we getting off this ship? Is it going to keep being this boring?

Even when other things happened in the second half that should've had some of kind of impact, I was like meh okay so that happened and this happened. This book was way too long for a story that was more character-driven than plot-driven.

I really love Cashore's style as well as the characters in this universe so I was very disappointed that I didn't like this as much as I wanted to.

I loved this book. I loved the characters and the story. I didn’t want it to end.

I love this series, but Seasparrow was disappointing to me. I wasn't a fan of Hava. She's constantly irritated, angry, or ashamed of being irritated or angry. About halfway through, I realized nothing really happened besides the ship sinking. And that stayed the same through the end of the book. Oddly, I wasn't bored, I just wanted SOMETHING to happen. Instead, almost the whole book was just reading Hava's thoughts.

I think I'll be skipped this book whenever I reread the story.

Cliff notes for myself:
- Ship sinks, the party minus one survives a trek through the north back home.
- Bitterblue and Giddon marry secretly
- Bitterblue makes a treaty with other nations to not use zilfium to make explosives and decides to not secretly stockpile her own explosives supply
- Hava, Linny, and the rest of the crew sail off on a new ship.
- Kera is freed and brought back to Estill by the Council.

I didn't think I would like this installment, but I loved it! Hava has a special place in my heart and now a special place in the Graceling Realm series.

Only thing? I thought we were getting a trans character with Lenny. Thrilled that Hava seems to be Asexual representation, but felt a bit cheated what with Lenny having such feminine features and that being one of the reasons she's drawn to him.

I hope there's more to come--I love watching the borders of the map expand.

4.5

This was good - I liked a lot of things about it. Hava's character and personality, shown very well through her actions and difficulties interacting with other people. She was really interesting to see as she developed relationships and thought things through. The foxes and their connectedness with Hava and others was also an interesting aspect to the wholes tory. Linny was great, and it's always nice being back in the Graceling world.

In the middle section of this, I felt like I was re-reading Hampton Sides' non-fiction account of a doomed arctic expedition "In the Kingdom of Ice." I was not surprised to see in Cashore's acknowledgements at the end that this book was one of her primary references.

Generally, this felt just a bit too long and sometimes repetitive in Hava's working out of her history & future -- it was still good, but there's just something about "Graceling" and "Fire" that still make them stand head and shoulders above the other books in this series - the plots have a tautness and the romances are just more exqusite. This one was good, but not Graceling-level great.

I liked the book as much as a person can when they don’t really like the main character. She’s frustrating and does not react maturely. That aside, I liked the journey of the book. Yes it was slow, but slow doesn’t mean bad.

Took me so long to finish this one because it's the last in the series (thus far) and wanted to savor it. I really love this series and hope there will be more books in the future.
