Unlike most of Saroyan, this is a stark, realistic play. Touching the themes of innocence, loneliness, isolation, and love, the play chronicles an evening in a small town jail. There, a small-town girl who cooks for the jail, and an incarcerated itinerant gambler find - and lose - each other.
The dialogue is a vibrant blend of realism and lyricism. The ending is surprising and, ultimately, tragic.
Very very good piece.
