Friends and relatives encourage Anne Elliot to reject Captain Wentworth's marriage proposal due to his lack of riches and status. When Wentworth returns home from the Navy after more than seven years, Anne realizes she still has deep love for him, but Wentworth only appears to be interested in Anne's friend.

This is my favorite novel by Jane Austen. In so many ways, Anne Elliot is relatable. This novel by Jane Austen stands out among her other works because it is more delicate and honest. Jane Austen truly projected herself through Anne, therefore the characters are much more familiar to me. Anne, like her, is snarky, bright, and energetic. It's a real bad Austen didn't get a man like Wentworth.

Persuasion, Jane Austen’s last completed novel, is commonly referred to as her most adult work. While I wholeheartedly agree on this front, I also believe that the beloved nature of Persuasion throughout generations stems not only from the maturity of the protagonist, but the bittersweet love story.
Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, an unmarried woman of 27, as she encounters the man who’s marriage proposal she refused years ago. As there relationship rekindles into a gray area of attachment, Anne is forced to reflect on the choices which led up to her refusal.
I think my favorite part of the novel was the yearning itself. It felt tangible as their relationship digressed, and added essential components to the complexities of Anne’s characters.
Since Austen was battling sickness at the time of her drafting Persuasion, this novel can at some points feel rushed, however I would highly recommend to any Austen fans!

I absolutely loved this book! Normally with Jane Austen it's hard not to compare everything to Pride and Prejudice; and though I still love P&P more of course, this is the first of her other novels that I felt could really hold up! It's lovely, and I highlighted so many lines, and I got through the last two thirds of the book in just two days. There were points at which I really didn't know how it would end or what would happen, which seems rare in romance. I really loved this book.

I forgot how fun Austen is to read, but also how scathing it can be. Anne's meant to be this gentle, level headed character, but the narrator's cutting remarks very much clash with that - unless that's meant to be Anne's real feelings? Who knows, there's probably a SparksNotes out there to answer that question

I hadn't read a book by Jane Austen in a looong time. Last year I contemplated re-reading Emma but I had hated it so much the first time round that I couldn't bring myself to the task again. I remembered feeling really sad while watching the BBC adaptation of Persuasion, but a few friends convinced me I should try reading it, and they were right. Mind you, I felt it dragged quite a bit, and I couldn't care less about the endless discussions and social niceties for most of the book, but I did enjoy the fact that the heroin wasn't a very young woman dazzled by first love. I found her and Captain Wentworth quite endearing, and while I wish the book had been half as short, not so fatphobic and elitist, I'm glad I finally read it.
