Narrative is cleverly given in alternating timelines, one proceeding and the other working backwards so that main character is slowly illuminated and we can understand how Jake came to be the way she is. The only disappointing thing about the book is the lack of full resolution at the end. I think a couple things could have been cleared up at the close, there are almost too many loose ends to be an open end. Otherwise, a stark, devastating, and prickly novel. The main character does not overtly want to be loved but you do anyway.
