I just, ugggg. I REALLY wanted to love this, I've been SO excited to read this book ever since I got it but it is just so incredibly slow and boring and not keeping my attention at all. It took me nearly 30 minutes to trudge through 15 pages because I kept just not wanting to read and finding anything else to do tbh.
I'm definitely putting it down for now because it's slowing down my booktubathon reading, but I might pick it back up later on? not sure.

I will start by saying that this book had me hooked from the get go. The first line is brutal in it's imagery and gives a clear idea of what is to come in the pages that follow, yet as I became gradually more unsettled and disturbed by what I was reading, I found that I didn't want to put the book done. It is easy to see why this novel (though quite short) has gained such attention. It is raw and haunting in every way. Wyld writes fluently and her words are beautiful, yet violent and explicit at times. I would most certainly that this book is not for the faint hearted. My niggles with the book came with the ambiguous ending, an epilogue that left me with many more questions than answers. The jumping around in time left me confused at moments too but I still really enjoyed this book and I think to understand it completely, it needs to be reread a few times.

What? What just happened?

Dark, compelling, sometimes horrific. This is a beautifully written page-turner of a read.

Really complex, ambitious novel. I wanted to like it even more than I did. Time will tell if I bump up the rating. I made the mistake of reading this short book over a week with breaks in between. I kept forgetting what had happened when I started reading again. There were 4 or 5 different time periods that we switch between whenever a new chapter starts. When I got near the end when we go way back in Jake’s life, I was like “wait, what?” I flipped back through the book twice thinking I had forgotten something, but no, this was new. I also had little sense of place in this book. It never felt to me like the current times pieces were in the UK and not Australia, but that’s a small quibble. I admire this book tremendously. I think this book leads into her newest novel, The Bass Rock, beautifully in terms of structure. The Bass Rock is miraculous. All The Birds, Singing is very close.
