What is a life for, if not to live? This book certainly shows a new perspective and embodies the notion of “a new lease on life”.

The concept is intriguing but the writing is fairly flat. Perhaps the author didn’t want to get too dark by portraying mental health struggles in a realistic way? Although they did include
suicide
so, who knows. Instead of diving into the emotions of the protagonist, it feels like the plot of driven by surface-level events that don’t ring true to me. Maybe one day I’ll read it in a different mood and feel differently about it. It’s very popular so it could just be me.

I really enjoyed this book! I did feel like it could get repetitive, and sometimes fell flat, but I think the meaning behind it is very impactful. I finished the book in one day and left it feeling good and hopeful. There is an air of selfishness around the entire story, with Nora and her life choices. The philosophical basis was meaningful but not too overbearing. The beginning was rough, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I found myself identifying with Nora, in a sense, regarding regrets and “what if’s”. Along with the feeling of being stuck and guilty. Her self destructive behavior and “life fright.” However, reading the process it took for Nora to find herself was comforting in a way. We are nothing but endless potential.

There are a lot of philosophies in books I've read that come off as desperate. There are times that characters are sad, simply, just because they are. It was fun to have that refreshing state of life— that are times we are lonely, simply, because we are. And no amount of wanting something is going fill that in. Reading this book made me realize how much I had thought of living in other lives of mine. I realized that I just wanted to get a glimpse of them but never suffer through them the way I did with my "root life" per se. I've seen myself in this book, wanting to write stuff, broach on philosophy, have a dog— and I'm thankful that when i get those things, I won't be back in the Midnight Library.

I really enjoyed this book. It was emotional and tense at times. It was nice to see the main character develop and come to terms with how to move on and just live. I do get teary eyed at times.
