La Specialista è una donna in fuga, dal suo passato, dai suoi fantasmi e dal suo lavoro. Una donna costantemente braccata, prudente fino all'assurdo, che si ritroverà a dover escogitare una soluzione nuova per sopravvivere, quando sul suo cammino incontrerà altre persone coinvolte in un complotto enormemente più grande di tutti loro.
The Chemist è un libro interessante. Piacevole e coinvolgente, di sicuro, ma non senza difetti. L'ho apprezzato, anche se mi aspettavo qualcosa di più.
La trama è ben strutturata. La storia ci mette un po' ad ingranare, l'inizio risulta un po' lento e difficoltoso, e il distacco della protagonista aiuta poco il coinvolgimento nella storia. Ma dopo le prime cinquanta pagine, la storia ingrana; il ritmo inizia a farsi molto più serrato e coinvolgente, gli avvenimenti si susseguono rapidi, così come i colpi di scena e il libro si legge in fretta. Purtroppo, più avanti nella narrazione ho riscontrato un ritorno al ritmo altalenante; il libro presenta sprazzi di adrenalina qua e là, per poi rallentare il racconto fino a renderlo quasi noioso, per poi inserire un altro pezzo serratissimo e avanti così. Il ritmo non è costante, e questo potrebbe essere un vantaggio, ma per me è risultato a tratti in un calo dell'interesse verso gli accadimenti della storia. Mi sono trovata a ignorare il libro per giorni a volte, e altre volte a fare le 4 del mattino senza riuscire a scollarmi dalle pagine.
In ogni caso, la storia è una buona storia. Mi aspettavo qualcosa di più "fantascientifico", ma in realtà questo non è altro che un thriller ben scritto.
I personaggi potevano essere caratterizzati meglio. Devo ammettere che per tutto il romanzo sono rimasta indecisa riguardo ai miei sentimenti per la protagonista, e ancora non ho capito se l'ho apprezzata o se mi è stata enormemente antipatica. Inizialmente ha sicuramente prevalso l'antipatia, ma ci sono stati momenti in cui l'ho apprezzata. In generale, però, e a malincuore, mi è rimasta abbastanza indifferente.
Daniel è sicuramente il personaggio più interessante; purtroppo non è stato approfondito come avrei voluto, gli si è data una caratteristica principale e si è puntato solo su quella per tutta la durata della storia. Mi sarebbe piaciuto vedere qualche sfumatura in più.
Ma in generale, sembra che questa modalità sia stata applicata un po' a tutti i protagonisti del romanzo, non solo a Daniel. Anche Kevin è un personaggio abbastanza bidimensionale, che affronta un'evoluzione scarsa e solo verso la fine, un po' come tutti gli altri. Sui personaggi si poteva fare qualche sforzo in più.
Lo stile, infine, è quello semplice e ben riconoscibile di Meyer. Niente fronzoli, niente velleità: uno stile asciutto e diretto, adatto a una narrazione adrenalinica di azione e colpi di scena.
Devo ammettere di aver trovato qualche tratto eccessivamente confusionario; è stata data forse troppa poca attenzione alle parti scientifiche della narrazione. Sicuramente si vedeva una minuziosa ricerca dietro, ma i concetti non erano spiegati al lettore con altrettanta dovizia di particolare e non con sufficiente chiarezza, almeno in alcuni passaggi. Anche qualche scena d'azione risulta un po' confusa e poco chiara. Inoltre, a livello di trama ho trovato alcune esagerazioni un po' poco realistiche, che richiedono una sospensione dell'incredulità a volte eccessiva, ma niente di insormontabile.
Onestamente, credo che il mio giudizio sia influenzato anche dalle aspettative; archiviati tutti i discorsi sulla saga di Twilight, mi aspettavo di Meyer qualcosa di più simile all'Ospite, che era stato un libro che mi aveva colpito moltissimo e mi era piaciuto davvero tanto. Invece ho trovato qualcosa di un po' diverso, sempre scritto bene, ma non ai livelli dell'Ospite.
Nel complesso, comunque, un buon libro, coinvolgente, che fa il suo lavoro. Niente di eccessivamente entusiasmante, ma sicuramente è un libro che intrattiene e fa venir voglia di essere letto.

The book took me hostage from the first chapters. When I was not reading it I kept on thinking about reading it and figuring out what possibly could be next. Furthermore i am not really a big fan of thrillers or detectives, but this one was captivating and enjoyable. Only at the end it all felt not worked out completely and rushed. But all and all a good entertaining read.

If you can unhook your most sceptical neurones and just enjoy the ride, this is great entertainment. It's almost like several books in one - there is a Twilight element of slightly overblown romantic love, there's a chase, a spy thriller, a political plot, a kidnapping, and the world's smartest dogs. Phew!
A very smart chemist, whose skills have been used in the past for some morally dubious acts (involving torture - warning, we do get some rather painful scenes) has been on the run for years from her former employers, out to get her. She is constantly on the watch, with tricks up her (literal) sleeves. When she is approached with an olive branch and asked to help these same employers who claim the world is in danger from a biological threat, the good doctor weighs up her options and agrees to interrogate their suspect, using her favoured methods.
The thing is, when she 'bumps' into him, there's a 'chemistry' between them, and it's not one she's artificially created. But he wants to kill millions...
And that is just the start of this action-packed brick of a book. It did feel rather full but I didn't feel it was bloated with storylines, they did tally well together. Juliana (who uses many names throughout the book) can be a little annoying - she's paranoid (with good reason), brittle and brusque, but she's also a great fighter, scientist and lead character.
As with Meyer's Twilight series, the love element of the book starts quite strongly but tails off into lovelorn longing after a while, leaving the other elements of the story to take over with more interesting matters. Fine with me - non-stop action, it felt like Mission Impossible and The Fugitive rolled into one.
The supporting cast were probably stronger than some of the leads, though I don't want to go into detail for fear of giving away twists. There's a chemistry between some characters that I found more realistic than that between the two leads as well.
I read this over the Christmas period, wanted to move more quickly through it actually, but it was a very entertaining read, and could make a great film or TV series. Plenty of action and both women and men will find a character to relish I think, there are some great set-pieces and climaxes.
It's not high-brow literature, but it's a great read, good fun. Twilight fans who are still teenagers might transfer over to adult novels with this nicely, there are some familiar themes of dependence and obsessive love here that will feel similar, and it feels like an action movie you'd see at the cinema.

The characters are wonderfully dynamic and the story wraps itself up nicely at the end. Paced in a way that keeps you on your toes and I found it hard to point to a slow or boring spot. Wonderfully portrayed female character; realistically strong. The romance seemed the slightest bit rushed, but I enjoyed how the characters interacted with each other. The ending is fantastic! I love to see a woman in such a powerful position. Amazing book.
