This is a really good fictionalized account of Ernest Hemingway's first wife, Hadley Richardson, but told through Hadley's eyes. Apparently the author stuck to the facts and just elaborated on the emotional inner lives of Hadley and Ernest and I really enjoyed that.
I don't know if I would qualify this book as romantic. I already roughly knew Hemingway's life so I felt a sense of impending doom all the time. It was a beautiful love story but I knew it wasn't going to last but I think the author used that to her advantage. She tells you in the first chapter that the marriage will dissolve, so even if you don't know Hemingway's story you know it's coming.
McLain created such a beautifully broken world that I'll definitely be looking into the sequel she wrote about one of Hemingway's other wives. I'm interested to see if she can convince me that one of Hemingway's other relationships was as beautiful as the one McClain imagined between Hemingway and Hadley.
