This was a well written character exploration of the people behind the first journey to space. I enjoyed the comparison of the parallel efforts (and parallel media involvement) of the USSR and US space programs.

The author has done an impressive amount of primary research (interviews, digging through recently opened archives) that allows him to dig into the Soviet side of the Space Race, and contrast the Soviet and US space programs. He does a great job of making the technical details accessible to the lay person. I was fascinated with the Gemini and Apollo space flights growing up. This book gave me the history and context behind those flights.
