Ohhhh yes, what every fantasy reader wants - depressing stories about sad people with no gumption. Seriously, what a group of lame AF characters. Really cool concept but the author chose the wrong characters to develop.

"No one deserves protection over anyone else. No human above, no human below."

Laina's brother was shot and killed by a police officer, but the footage shows more than just another terrible case of police brutality - it shows a monster. Thus begins the Breaking, the world coming to know that monsters live among us and always have. Chaos ensues as our web of characters try to reckon with the shifting state of the world around them.

This book was more literary and metaphorical than I thought it was going to be! It's shelved as fantasy and horror, but it definitely also gives literary vibes to me. That's definitely not a bad thing but it means I feel like I can't talk about it as intelligently. I definitely feel like Turnbull is way more big brain than I am! I also listened to the audiobook, which while very well performed (it won awards for the performance), I think it became harder to follow who was who and what was happening when.

However, this book is definitely great! It reminded me of Beloved in the way that it switches between characters and times to create a larger web. Both the writing style and the diction were well-done. Through the metaphor of people being monsters, we see how marginalized communities are treated. Though real-life marginalizations are not ignored; most of our characters are POC and/or queer. There are discussions of how the intersections of different identities affect people and compound discriminatory behaviors. But we also get sick monsters! I think the coolest part of the urban fantasy aspect of this was that we aren't handed everything; as the book continues, we get more puzzle pieces as to what is going on. Not to mention the horror aspects - I think the greatest scene in the entire book is the peak of its horror, when our characters truly experience terrible awe.

Overall, though this book was too big brain for me to fully "get" everything through audio, I'll definitely be recommending this one to others.
