Don't know how to rate this but damned if I haven't been wrestling with a lot of the same shit that Ridley is. That's a little validating, but also a lot close to home and decidedly nightmarish.

At no point did I really fully understand what was going on. Why did I like it then? To Cadwell's point: sometimes you have to get comfortable not knowing the full story. I won't continue with the series, but the writing style was new to me and I liked that the perspective shifts kept me on my toes.

This quickly became my new favorite urban fantasy novel! I loved everything about this book. The characters, the prose, and the strange alternate world that Turnbull painted on the pages. I loved how real and grounded everything felt as well despite there being literal monsters and gods walking around amongst their human brethren. This was just so good and I'll probably be screaming about this novel to my friends for a long ass time. A brilliant start to what will be a truly legendary series.
(PS. CAN'T FUCKING WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK TO COME OUT LETS GOOOOOO!!!!!)

Pros: Characters, writing, plot, stakes, motivation - all mesmerizing.
Cons: So many POVs that I could not keep track, many in different timelines.
I feel like this would have worked better as a series of interlinked stories - the switches from POV often came only after a few pages and it was very distracting to keep it up.
That said, I would read more of him and might even pick up book 2 - the writing is gorgeous.

Wow. When I read the synopsis on the back of the book, I was trying to imagine how so many different genres could combine seamlessly into one story. But they did and they do. Having finished, there’s still so much more I want to know, especially about the narrator. I will definitely be reading the second book!
