An absolutely wild ride. I loved it.
Other reviewers note that it's challenging to keep track of the characters and time/reality shifts, and I also found that to be true. However, it wasn't a negative aspect of the experience for me. I tried to keep pace at first, but the story moves quickly in all sorts of directions. It gets a hold of you before you can get a hold of it, and I had to accept that I wouldn't be able to connect all the dots on the first read through. The plot twists and turns, and you just have to let it do it's thing—which is, in crude summary, pretty wonderful. There's magic, mystery, battle, fantastical world building, complex political and social commentary, relationships, love, loss, thoughts on what it means to be human (or something other than). It's the kind of story that gets stuck in your head long after you put it down.
I can't wait to read it again, and I look forward to the next book in the saga.
[EDIT: On my second read through, I made a whiteboard online so I could keep up with the character connections more easily. You need more than just a single red string—in fact, you need a pretty heavy dose of color coding. But I strongly recommend taking notes or making charts! It helped me follow more this time, which in turn made me love it more.]
