I spent the first hundred pages thinking "Wow, this is surprisingly progressive, for an old western", then checked the title page and wondered how on earth it was published by in Englishman in 2019. In retrospect that should have been obvious - it's almost Too Western, like it hits every trope that's entered into the cultural ideal of the western story. This is a guy who set out to write a western, and by God did he do it. To be honest, it's just about as non-racist as you could reasonably expect while also writing the standard white lone rider main character, but it could have been improved further by a little more research into colonial violence, especially in the Americas, and the genocide perpetuated by the US government. The implication that the native population was massacred only by some bad apples, and that the US army would help natives if asked, felt naive at best.
