In every volume I love the creative and imaginative landscapes the author creates. Even though they’re in the dark and in a scary unknown time, they have lanterns and campfires so the color palette makes this feel nice and cozy. I love the creature Soot that they saved in the last book that is now their companion. I love the Arsai that’s always with them too. The author is so talented at creating wondrous illustrations, I only wish that sometimes they were drawn bigger because when we get a really small drawing or a really big one, the small details are kind of blurry. There are some great quotes about life in this one just like the other ones, “Maybe we’ll fail again. We probably will. But at least we can say we tried.”
I love how there’s always a variety of nature landscapes and settings in the novels. My favorite drawings are when they’re in the library and there’s a bunch of little square panels surrounding the tall bookshelf taking up the whole middle of the page, and in the beginning around the campfire, and later when Cad recalls his village when it was still lively, and when they’re in space. Pretty much just all of the drawings. I love all the glowing mushrooms in the dark and then when we get to be in that nature valley outside where there is light.

I wish there wasn’t so much conflict between Bea and Cad in this one, I loved their friendship in the last two volumes. But it does get better after awhile. I love the Arsai character so much. I’m happy this one didn’t end up being too dark, it was refreshing to get to see the point of view of the creators of Irpa and how everything happened. I really like that we get to see what Kest was like before they took the lights. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait for the next one. “Are you thinking?” “Yes. A lot actually, pretty much nonstop. I try not to, but I can’t seem to help it.” That’s me a lot of the time and I felt very comforted knowing it’s not just me.
