Companion book to Alone. Excellent!!

I recently learned I really like books written in verse. There were some really lovely written verses in here. I enjoyed how this book used a number of different styles to tell the story from multiple points of view. It was a good companion to the Alone book.

While I didn't enjoy this as much as it's predecessor Alone, it was nice to revisit this world from the evacuation side of events and get more concrete answers. Also, unlike some other reviewers I've read, I really enjoyed the 4-character narrative and how each kid had their own distinct writing style. Considering this book is fairly fast paced, the differing writing styles blended towards developing each kid's character and unique perspective.

Like in my review of Alone, I commend Freeman for writing middle grade that paints a realistic picture of kid's capabilities while also not discounting them at all. Both Alone and Away don't talk down to their readers and embrace the perspective of kids as heroes, change makers, and so much more adept than adults often give them space to be.
