All that She Carried is a fascinating piece of historical writing in which the author has used one special artefact - a cotton sack given by a Black woman to her young daughter who was being sold away from her - as a starting point for her investigation. Who were these women and what does the sack and it’s contents tell us about slavery and it’s legacy? A brilliant easily-digestible combination of scholarly research and inspired informed imaginings for when the research came up short.
