4.5

Carlos Hernandez has a gift for writing laugh-out-loud humor that can turn serious on a dime for maximum impact. Works like Nimona, Brooklyn 99, The Good Place, etc. are perfect examples of this trick and Hernandez's work surely deserves to be a household name in the same way. Although this volume doesn't quite hit on the emotional chords that the first does and the silliness can lengthen the scenes by far too much, this Sal and Gabi adventure is still a clever, well-written ride through Sal's universe and its unforgettable characters.

This was cute and fun and I really enjoyed reading it. I love Sal and Gabi, they are some of my favorite characters ever. I also really liked seeing Sal's character development in this book. I think one of the strongest elements of this series is that the adults actually listen to the kids and help them. I wish we got to see a bit more of Sal and Gabi work together more because it felt a little bit like they had separate storylines and things they weren't telling the other, but overall I really enjoyed it.

I would say my only real issue with this book is that it needed a bit more editing. There were some things that didn't bother me too much like small grammar errors, typos and continuity issues. But I did have a bigger problem with this: “It’s gonna have Cuban and American and Nicaraguan and African American and Haitian and Honduran and Dominican and Columbian and all the other backgrounds people come from as part of the show.” It's Colombian, ok? I'm COLOMBIAN.

I love this series!!

At first glance, it is a great sci-fi story about kids making holes in the fabric of the universe. But really, it is much more. It is so full of humor and insight about family and friendship.

The characters are truly delightful, the plot immediately sucks readers in, and I sometimes I find myself chuckling out loud as I read.

I cannot recommend the audio books highly enough because the narrator, Anthony Rey Perez, makes awesome books even better.

I am happy to say I loved the Sal & Gabi sequel. We have more friendship, science, magic, and mayhem! And of course, more Gabidad goodness. Not to mention it made me finally try my local empanadas!

I think this book may have been...better than the first one?
Okay, this series really might be my new favorite middle grade series. Sorry to Percy Jackson, but the Sal and Gabi series is just so good.
Some of my favorite parts of this book (we're going list style):
*Possible spoilers*
- That Dad: The Final Frontier has a car seat on her head to carry Gabi around in
- The talking toilet (whose name I forget)
- The fact that said talking toilet bleeps out all bad words
- The fact that Sal got to spend time in a space station (even if it was with FixGabi)
- Yasmany performing a 'magic trick' to get Sal out of the locker
- The Reáls making a house for Yasmany to live in
- Everyone working together to create an amazing Alice in Wonderland show
- The fact that Gabis from a bunch of universes came together to try to fix the universes
- Gabi and Sal's friendship (it is so amazing)

Book was so much fun.

Sal is so awesome!! There are so many wonderful things about this book! I want to give it to my nephews and say “Him. Be like him.” I can’t wait for them to read it.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending (a little too sudden, a little too kumbaya).

Oh, and the Yasmani thing never happens. I’m not sure why they put that in the blurb. Maybe next book? Though this seemed pretty wrapped up to me. Maybe a cut out plot-line? II guess It would’ve been interesting, but ’m glad we had plenty of Yasmani in this book. He’s such a great foil for Sal’s crazy high emotional intelligence, plus he’s ultimately a great kid.

Smile on my face (when I wasn’t outright laughing, which i was most of the time) the whole time.
