After being charmed for decades by Auntie Mame (the books, the movie, and the musical), I expected to be charmed by the story of the man who created her. I was sorely disappointed. As portrayed in this book, Patrick Dennis was a fairly terrible human. As I read, I kept wondering why anyone thought it was a good idea to publish this book.

I tried to keep in mind the time period this book was written- very early '70s- but most of the descriptions of Mexico and its citizens were cringeworthy/offensive.
