3.5 stars.

I find the format incredibly difficult to read, being a lifelong fiction addict. But I really wanted to give this my best attention - a topic I enjoy reading about and an author I respect.

In a dystopian London where the True Church are in power, freethinkers are violently targeted. A motorcycle courier manages to become a target unknowingly and thus sets off events leading to bloodshed and revolution.

I didn't really like the Blake quotes and Biblical slant of the story. It didn't appeal or need to be there for the story to make sense. It could have worked as a full-length novel.

It is probably because I'm unfamiliar with graphic novels but I found it very hard to keep track of what was happening, with lots of violent action requiring a few glances back to understand what was happening in each frame. That may be just my own lack of exposure rather than any weakness in the book.

It's certainly interesting, but I'd much rather tried this as a novel. It's a good idea but needs more fleshing out of characters.

I liked the artwork in this graphic novel but I think the story took itself far too seriously for something was, at heart, quite silly and light.

The art style made it difficult to understand what was going on in places, and the story felt a little heavy handed, but it's heart was in the right place.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Overall, I'd rate it 2.5, right down the middle.

Read for the Kate Greenaway Award 2015

A frustrating read but not one that I regret.

The book wears its influences on its sleeve, from William Blake to 2000 AD. It also owes more than a small debt to Alan Moore: the mysticism and bold black and white line art of From Hell, the Fascistic government of V for Vendetta.

However, I really admire its ambition. It may not quite come off in the end but the art is striking, the world is well-realised and the William Blake and Biblical quotations and references throughout (not to mention the Wizard of Oz) create something truly mythic and strange. I think this may find its audience among the more thoughtful of older High School pupils.

I enjoyed this dark, dystopic tale...but I'm pretty sure all of the literary allusions went over my head (not being much of a poetry reader)!
